Ivan "The Terrible" denies Cuba with 30-point haul
In the first World League duel between the two teams in two years, Miljkovic was an inspirational figure in Serbia and Montenegro's come back from 2-1 down to deny a young and enthusiastic Cuban side in a five-set marathon.
Infront of a packed Ciudad Deportiva Hall in Havana, Cuba took the initiative early on, riding on the support of their fantastic fans they quickly registered a first set lead 25-21. However Miljkovic was quick to rally his troops and the Olympic and European champions soon found their rhythm in the second set, finding Miljkovic as often as possible to seal a point.
But Cuba were still determined not to disappoint their home fans and Tomas Aldazabal and Yasser Portuondo inparticular (20 points on the night) led Cuba to a rousing third set victory 25-17. An astonishing scoreline, which had the stadium buzzing.
Unfortunately for the home fans it was the visitors though who took advantage of the frantic atmosphere and Serbia and Montenegro repeated the same scoreline in the fourth set before
jumping to a 3-0 lead in the tie-break and a 15-11 set win.
"We need to give more than 100% to overcome a crisis and it's evident that we still have problems," Nikola Gbric, captain of Serbia and Montenegro said. "But overall, we are very happy to have won".
"It was an excellent game, which we could have won, especially in front of a great crowd," said Cuban coach Eliseo Ramos. "But our serve failed and we could not attack well thus, the win escaped us".
Astonishing match and incredible performance from Ivan "The Terrible". One waits with great anticipation to see what the 23-year-old will do in the second game on Sunday morning starting at 00:40 GMT.
