VakifBank TTelekom Win Pool A after victory over Kenya Prisons

Doha, Qatar, October 12, 2011 – VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul secured the top spot in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship by defeating Kenya Prisons Nairobi 25-13, 25-17, 25-10 on Wednesday at Doha, Qatar.

VakifBank TTelekom (3-0) will face Pool B second-place finisher Sollys Nestle Osasco in the semifinal round on Thursday at 10 a.m. The other semifinal will have Pool B winner Rabita Baku taking on Dominican Republic’s Mirador Santo Domingo at 5 p.m.

VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul was led by Malgorzata Glinka’s 15 points, followed by Christiane Fuerst’s 11 points. Everlyne Makuto scored nine points to pace Kenya Prisons Nairobi.

VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul’s serve caused problems for Kenya Prisons Nairobi as they held a 12-2 advantage in aces, in addition to a slim 8-5 margin in blocks.

The first set remained close with VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul holding a slim 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. However, the Turkish club went into high gear by scoring eight of the next 10 points to secure a 16-7 advantage at the second technical timeout. After staying near point-for-point for the next nine serves, VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul finished out the set quickly with a 4-2 run at 25-13. Christiane Fuerst paced VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul with six points in the opening set, including two aces and a block.

Kenya Prisons Nairobi led 4-3 early in the second set and reached the first technical timeout with an 8-6 advantage after a VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul attack error. Malgorzata Glinka tied the set at 8-all with a spike. Kenya Prisons Nairobi went back up by two at 10-8 on a Mercy Moim attack, only to have VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul tied the set at 10-all. After the score was tied 11-all, VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul rolled off seven of the next nine points for an 18-12 advantage. Kenya Prisons Nairobi cut the deficit to 18-16 following a Evelyne Makuto block. Glinka slammed an attack to extend her team’s lead to 20-16. Guldeniz Onal served an ace sending Kenya Prisons Nairobi into a timeout down 22-16. Ozge Cemberci scored a fifth straight point out of the break and placing the score at 23-16. Kenya Prisons Nairobi broke the run, but VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul notched the final two points for a 25-17 victory.

VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul inched their way to an 8-5 lead at the third set’s first technical timeout. After that, the winning team had no problems in causing Kenya Prisons Nairobi to call their second timeout down 20-9. VakifBank TTelekom scored five of the last six points for a 25-10 victory.
