Schedule unveiled for Club World Championships

Thailand's Chang qualified for the tournament by clinching the Asian Women's Club Championship

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 25, 2011 – The calendar for the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships was launched by the sport’s governing body on Thursday as the world’s top teams continue their preparations for the annual competition, due to be held in Doha, Qatar from October 8 to 14 for the third year running.

Eight men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete for the top prize in club volleyball in under two months’ time as the resurrected tournament – which returned in 2009 for men and 2010 for women – looks set to put on its best show yet.

In the men’s edition, Italy’s Trentino BetClic’s Pool B clash with Sesi SP on the final day of group action looks to be a fascinating encounter. The Italian club will be looking to claim an unprecedented third crown in a row. The side has been the bench mark for all other clubs in recent years and come to the seventh edition of the tournament as European champions.

African champions Al Ahly will need to be on top of their game if they are to make it through the pool and they open with a match against hosts Al Arabi Doha. Last year both teams finished fifth so will be eager to upset the odds and claim a semifinal spot.

In Pool A 2010 bronze medallists Paykan of Iran will take on newcomers KS Jastrzebski Weigel of Poland on the opening day while 2009 bronze medallists Zenit Kazan of Russia face Canada’s Trinity Western Spartans. Kazan fell short during this year’s Champions League against Trentino so will hope that a good outing in Doha will help them bounce back. Paykan, meanwhile, will want to build on last year’s success and an opening win will set them off on the right foot.

The women’s contest is certain to crown a new champion with title-holders Fernebahce of Turkey failing to qualify. The country will instead by represented by VakifBank Telekom who clinched the women’s edition of the Champions League in March. They head Pool A and open against fellow newcomers Las Criollas de Caguas of Puerto Rico in what is likely to be an exciting affair

Joining them will be Prisons of Kenya who begin their campaign against the Puerto Rican club two days later. Last year the side brought a passionate game to Doha but unfortunately it didn’t translate into points as they finished fifth.

Pool B sees last year’s runners-up Osasco Voleibol Clube of Brazil return. They were pipped at the post last year and will be eager to make amends and they begin with a match against Thailand’s Chang, who face an uphill battle to make it out of the group stages.

They will be joined by Rabita Baku of Azerbaijan, another country never to have been represented at the tournament who will step out for the first time on the fourth day of the tournament against the Thai team.

The semifinals will all take place on Thursday October 13 with the men’s and women’s matches alternating. The bronze medal matches will then take place a day later with the women’s final taking place at 14:00 GMT and the men’s at 16:00 GMT.
