Francisco Hervas is in need of some
good results with the Spanish team and the 2004
World League is the best place to deliver.
Spain hosted the final phase of the
last event yet couldnít impose themselves on the
heavyweights of world volleyball. And, to make
matters slightly worse, Hervasís young team
couldnít finish any higher than eighth at the
European Championships held in Germany.
Born in 1962, Francisco Hervas was
first appointed as Spain's head coach in 1997. A
former player, he captained his country to eighth
place at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. During his
career, he played for several Spanish clubs,
including Salesianos Atocha (Madrid), Atletico
Madrid, C.V. Benalmadena (Malaga), C.V. Cisneors
In 1992 he was made responsible for
technical matters at the Spanish Volleyball
Federation and a year later he became the director
of the national coaches department. From 1995 to
1996 he served as assistant coach of the national
men's team, before assuming the top position in
the following year.
