Italy’s Serena Ortolani scored 19 points for her team, while Priscilla Rivera was the best scorer for Dominican Republic with 16.
Dominican Republic looked to shock the Italians from the start as they went into an early lead. But Italy responded immediately with Ortolani efficient in attack. Italy continued to power through as their opponents team committed many faults to go behind 1-0.

Italy took an early lead in the second but the Caribbean side fought back, working harder at the net. Bethania de la Cruz and Priscilla Rivera were crucial for Dominican Republic and despite strong spikes from Carolina Costagrande and Ortolani Italy went down to bring the scores level.

The third set started evenly with both sides close. Italy worked hard in defence blocking and diving to take the lead 21-18. A double substitution from Dominican Republic team wasn’t good enough as Italy stormed back into the lead at 2-1.

Italy took the lead in the fourth and continued to force Dominican Republic into errors. Italy continued to be patient and they continued to dominate. The Caribbean side couldn’t respond with the same speed and power, their spikes continuously hit back by Cardullo and her team mates. It was Italian captain Martina Guiggi who finished the set to seal victory.
On Saturday Dominican Republic will play hosts Poland, while Italy face debutants Argentina.
