Arguably the most successful Women's volleyball team from Africa, Kenya which is ranked 17 in the world, is participating in the competition after a 12-year lapse.

The team has participated in two Olympics (Sidney 2000 and Athens (2004) as well as two World Championships (Germany, 2002) and ((Japan 2006.)

Kenya qualified for the World Cup after winning the 16 Africa Championships for Senior Women that was held in Nairobi, Kenya last September. It beat Algeria, the reigning All Africa Games Championship, in the final after overcoming Egypt, which represented Africa in the previous edition of the World Cup, in the semi-finals.

The Team combines experience with youth and has a number of talented youngsters in Lydia Maiyo (Wing Spiker), Mercy Moim (Middle Blocker), Jane Wacu (Setter), Diana Khisa (Middle Blocker), and Janet Wanja (Setter).

Other players on which it depends include Brackcides Agala (Middle Blocker), Veteran Dorcas Ndasaba, the Best Scorer during the Africa Nations Championship in Nairobi (Wing Spiker), Catherine Wanjiru (Wing Spiker), Doris Palanga (Universal Player), Judith Tarus (Libero) Edna Rotich (Wing Spiker), Asha Makuto (Universal Player) and Jackline Barasa (Middle Blocker).

Kenya targets winning its first match on the world stage, after having come close a number of times during its previous attempts.


The 41-year old Sammy Kirongo started playing Volleyball in 1980. He played for the Kenya National Team for 13 years (1987 to 1999). He started coaching in 1998 and was the trainer for t he National Team to the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

He was the head coach for the Kenya Women's National Team to the 9 All Africa Games, 2007 held in Algiers, Algeria in which Kenya won a Bronze Medal. He was also the Head Coach for the National Team for the 16 Africa Nations Championship for Women held in Nairobi 2007, in which Kenya won the Gold Medal.

He expects Kenya to play well and win some matches during the World Cup.
