FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

Alba Hernández, the tower of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Alba Hernandez, 19-year, middle-blocker, 2.07, is the tallest player of the Womens' U20 Championship in Brno

Brno, Czech Republic, June 23, 2013 – During the official teams’ presentation at the Womens’ U20 World Championship, when Puerto Rico is ready to play and lined up, you can’t miss her. If Alba Hernández needs to tie her shoelaces, the average height of the team goes down to 183 centimetres. Then she stands and literally shades everyone with her 207 centimetres: any athlete in this tournament, since she is the tallest girl among all teams’ players in Brno.

During the presentation of the starting six, usually Puerto Rico libero Sahlimarie Merlo, who is 178-cm, enters the court running and giving a funny low "five" to all her team-mates: then every time she tries the "high five" with Alba. Failing quite hilariously: she never gets up there.

"Being so tall, you may have some problems with the bed in the hotels - jokes Alba Hernández. – My parents are tall, by I’m taller. And I have a cousin, Peter John Ramos, who is 2,21 and play basketball in Puerto Rico National team."

Her role now is middle-blocker. However, she played also as a spiker. "Yes, I can do that – she confirms. – My dream is becoming a better player and join Puerto Rico senior team. I want to play volleyball and enjoy playing, because I love it, as we show with the fun that we feel as a team when we play together."

She is now trying to achieve victories with her team in Czech Republic, while in Puerto Rico her books are ready: she is going to enter the University in her homeland, where she will start a Science class. But as a priority, she wants their first win at the World Championship.

"We can play better, we’re sure" confirms Alba.
