FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

The 12th edition of the Girls' Under 18 World Championship will take place in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand from July 26 to August 4, 2013. This is the second time that the city will host an FIVB event after it held the Girls’ Under 18 World Championship in 2009. However, it is the third time that Thailand will host an FIVB competition having organised the fifth edition in 1997 in Chiang Mai.

Nakhon Ratchasima, around 260km to the north-east of Bangkok is the capital of both the province and the district that bears the same name. Throught out its history it has been the main gateway to Thailand’s north-east region and the locals also refer to it as ‘Khorat’ on account of its location on the Khorat Plateau.

With a population of around 166,000 the city of Nakhon Ratchasima is an industrial and agricultural hub making it one of Thailand’s most important cities. It is known for its production of silk as well as its rice and sugar cane production. The city has a great deal on offer for visitors not least of which is Asia’s most modern zoo.

For the architecture buffs the Sala Loi temple that dates back to 1827 is a ‘must see’ as it is a striking example of the architecture of that era. The Khorat Royal Thai Air Force Base, used by United States’ forces during the Vietnam War, is also worth a visit as is the the Khao Yai National Park – Thailand’s second-largest of its kind.

The city is also rich in sporting culture. The multi-purpose sports complex named in honour of the 80th birthday of King Bhumbol Adulyadej, has hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2007 South East Asian Games and is an attractive addition to the city’s landscape.
