Team profile

Sada Cruizeiro are a pillar of Brazilian volleyball and have been preparing intensely for the 2013-14 season, having won the Superliga (Brazilian national championship) in 2012 and finished as runners-up in the seasons either side of that.

They were also runners-up in the World Championship last year and as hosts this year, Sada Cruzeiro have great expectations for the 2013 Club World Championship and can expect strong support from the local fans.

On court, three players who gained individual awards at the previous Championship are still around to lead the team: Serginho (Best Libero and Best Receiver), Wallace (Best Server) and William (Best Setter). Teammates Douglas Cordeiro, Filipe and Leal are also still around, in addition to coach Marcelo Mendez.

The squad has been strengthened with the addition of middle blocker Isac, Venezuelan outside hitter Luis Diaz and middle hitter Eder. Setter Vinhedo also brings some experience as he played in the World Championship with runners-up Jastrzebski Wegiel of Poland in 2011.

Marcelo Mendez has been coach of Sada Cruzeiro for five seasons, leading the club to a runner-up finish at the Club World Championship in Qatar in 2012, the gold medal in the South American Championship in 2012 and the Superliga (Brazilian national championship) title in 2011-12.

Born in Buenos Aires, Mendez was a two-time champion of Spain with Palma de Mallorca and coached the national team of Spain. He has also worked in Italy and coached River Plate and Daom in his home country.
