 Press Release
Peru earn second straight-set win

Topscorer for Peru, Brenda Daniella Uribe scored 14 points in the match against Japan

Singapore, Singapore, August 23, 2010 – With both sides having already qualified for Tuesday’s Girls’ Youth Olympic Games semifinals, Peru’s match against Japan was for Pool A honours and it was Peru who came out on top winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) in a packed Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Monday.

The first set was characterized by mistakes of both teams, especially in serves and receptions. The play was unpredictable but on the other hand gave some lucky points for both teams.

Peru’s setter, Alexandra Munos, used her two centrals a lot, giving plenty of opportunity to Daniela Brenda Huribe to be the best scorer of the match with 14 points.

The second set Japan surprised Peru by scoring six points in a row, and Peru couldn’t answer due to a lack of reception. Coach Natalia Magala called two time outs, and at 11-9 down, Peru seemed to be struggling. However, thanks to the killer spikes of Vivian Baella, the South Americans kept pace with Japan before taking control of the set at 19-16 before going on to win it.

Japan couldn’t match it anymore with Peru. Even captain Anna Fukami, whose blocks and spikes made her best scorer for her team, was finding it tough as Peru easily won the third and last set.

Peru tomorrow will play the semifinal 1 against the second place of Pool B thanks to winning their pool with four points (they won their two matches 3-0), and Japan the semifinal 2 against the winner of Pool B.
