The first set was a see-saw battle from start to finish with both European teams showing excellent fighting spirit and good execution. At 23-all, Ekaterina Bogacheva and Anna Kiseleva combined consecutive spikes to give Russia the 1-0 lead with a 25-23 score.
The Italians came back in the second set relying on the attacks of Mautino and Cagninelli and looked headed to a victory leading the score most of the time including a three-point advantage at 18-15. But Russia came back from 19-21 deficit winning four points in a row to take the lead 23-21 behind the spikes of Bogacheva, Smirnova and Kiseleva mixed with an ace by Ksenia Naumova. The set ended 25-22.
In the third set, the Russians led 8-7 and 16-13 at the technical pauses with their strong blocking led by Smirnova. Italia came back to tie at 22-all, but Russia won 26-24 with a block by Bogacheva to end the contest.
