MEXICALI, Mexico, August 26, 2007.- Puerto Rico blanked Mexico in the match for the eleventh place with scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-14.
It was a team-effort by the Puerto Ricans who outplayed the Mexicans in every aspect of the game. The winners outscored their opponents in serves (7-2) and in blocking (8-3).
Emanuel Batista led Puerto Rico with 10 points and Sequiel Sanchez, Omar Rivera and Ulises Maldonado each contributed 9 points. Francisco Enriquez recorded 13 points for Mexico.
Puerto Rico took an early commanding lead and won the first set with good serves –including three aces- and helped by 9 errors by their opponents. While the Puerto Ricans had a balanced attack conducted by setter Gonzalez, Enriquez carried the load of the Mexican’s offence with 5 spikes. The set finished 25-20 with last surge by the host team.
Enriquez and Manzo gave Mexico an 8-5 lead in the second set. Then Puerto Rico improved the blocking helped by Sanchez and Maldonado and took the lead 16-13 at the second pause. Mexican shortened the distance to 18-17, but after a time-out, the Puerto Ricans emerged stronger and won seven of the last eight points to win 25-18.
In the third set, Puerto Rico jumped to a 6-0 lead and was in front 8-1 at the first pause with good serves combined with errors from the Mexican side. The attack of Batista and Sanchez and the good blocking of Rivera were the main ingredients for Puerto Rico to cook the victory with a 25-14 third set.
