MEXICALI, Mexico, August 26, 2007.- Cuba closed its participation of the Boy’s Youth World Championship with a four-set victory over Tunisia by scores of 25-21, 30-32, 25-23, 25-21 good for the thirteenth place.
Rolando Cepeda led the Cuban side with 22 points, including two more aces added to his tournament leading total, while Captain Wilfredo Venero contributed 19 while starting the last two sets.
Tunisia had three players in double digits led by Hamza Rezgui and Ismail Moalla each with 13 tallies. Aymen Karqui added 10.
Venero was particularly effective with his spikes by landing 19 out of his 30 attempts, while Cepeda was good in 18 of 34.
Despite the loss, the Tunisians were a resilient team against the taller and stronger Cubans, especially in the second set when they were in front most of the time until Cuba tied up at 21-all forcing to go beyond regulations. Finally, Tunisia won with consecutive spikes by Moalla and Karqui.
Cuba took the first set without major difficulties but for the third and fourth the Caribbeans needed to make a big effort to prevail in the match that lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes.
