MEXICALI, Mexico, August 20, 2007.- Puerto Rico started the round for 9-16 places with an easy victory over Egypt in Pool G.
The Puerto Ricans triumphed in consecutive sets by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 in one hour and 14 minutes.
The Puerto Ricans relied on a very well balanced attack with Ulises Maldonado as their best scorer with 9 points, including two blocks. He was joined in the offence by Carlos Hernandez and Sequiel Sanchez each with 7 points, while Emanuel Batista and Omar Rivera added 6 apiece.
Egyptian Ahmed Mohammed was the match leading scorer with 19 tallies wasted in the losing cause.
Egypt committed too many errors and gave away 30 points in errors in contrast with the total of the 17 mistakes by Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico controlled the first set from start to finish thanks to its effective combinations, but in the second encountered some resistance from the African team who led 14-10. After passing that hurdle, they took command halfway the third set and never looked back with the brilliant play of setter Edgardo Gonzalez.
