USA surprised by blanking China

American Murphy Troy led the American victory over China

China took the lead 8-4 with giant Bian Hongmin hitting powerful spikes, but USA climbed back into the match on the shoulders of Austin Ellis and Murphy Troy and the score was 16-15 in favour of China at the second technical time-out. The Americans tied and took the lead 18-17 with a block and spike by setter Kauliakamova, but China came back to tie with a sht by Zhao Yichen. Troy then gave the advantage to USA but Zhao hit one for the tie and Chen Ping blocked for the lead 21-20. Troy tied it again and teams were evened at 24 when Troy hit long serve but then his team blocked to equal the score. At 26-25 in favour of China, Jaynes Tyler twice blocked sandwiching a spike of Troy for the American victory 28-26.

China took an early lead of 6-2 boosted by the attacks of Cheng and Wang Pengfei, but USA was close at the first pause when Chinese Bian broke a 7-7 tie with a soft spike. Lefty Carson Clark tied the score at 8 and the score stayed evened until USA combined spike and block from Bradley Lawson and Ellis for a 14-12 advantage. The Americans were in front 16-12 at the second stop. Hang Bin came from the bench to try to revive China and hit two big shots but the Americans maintained the same consistency to enhance the lead to 20-15. Troy gave USA a six-point lead at 21-15 and then China started to erase the distance with a spike by Cheng and a series of American errors. At 22-19, Tyler came from the bench to produce one point and later Troy levitated from the left side for point 24. Zou Zhichao hit one for China and Troy read the Chinese defence very well to locate a soft shot near the baseline for the 25-21 win.

China jumped to a 5-0 start in the third helped by two spikes by Zou and one ace by Fang Haoyu. The Americans shortened the margin to 7-6 with a couple of spikes by Carson and Bian hit one down the middle for the 8-6 difference. The Americans tied it at 12 with spike of Carson, ace by Kauliakamova and took a two-point lead (14-12) with block and spike by Lawson. At 15-13, a block by Jaynes produced a three-point lead for USA at the second technical time-out. Spike by Ellis and ace by Carson expanded the lead to 20-15. A couple of mistakes narrowed the lead but Carson hit for point 21. Kauliakamova produced the next American point and Cheng hit a thunder for China and the score was 22-19 for USA. Troy hit one off the Chinese block and Kou answered back from the right side. At 23-20, Lawson got one from the right and Huang Bin hit for China before Troy closed the match with an atomic bomb.
