Belgian coach: Players beat Mexico one point at a time

Belgium coach Julien van de Vijver: "We played an aggressive game against Mexico. They used to play strongly in the previous world meet two years ago on their home soil. This Mexico team are also strong. It’s not easy to beat them. In the second set, we trailed 19-24, but came back to win the battle. We get used to this during the practice session. We just keep on the fighting and try to score point by point. Although we successfully top Pool D, we can’t stop training. Our initial target of making it to the top eight round has already been fulfilled. Now, we have to go beyond that target. If we happen to take on hosts Thailand, I think it will be a good match. Thai players are very speedy despite the fact that we have never seen them play."

Captain Lise van Hecke: "While taking on a tough rival in a very close match like this, I admit that I have pressure. However, I think that the pressure will help me improve my game. There is no best player in my team for the win over Mexico. Everyone played well. We need everyone."

Mexico coach Ricardo de Jesus Nar: "It’s a good match. We played the European champions. We spiked well, but they were also good in blocking. However, we just made too many mistakes, especially in the second set. We could not win crucial points at the end of the set. That’s why we lost. Our match against the USA is our best performance, but I think the first two sets against Belgium are also good. Now, we have to wait for the match between the USA and Japan. I hope that it’s our team to make the quarter-finals. If we can’t go that far, we have to keep on for the remaining matches."

Captain Xitlali Herrera: "We made several mistakes today and we lost concentration. The first two sets are very tough and we lost our touch in the third set. Though the next day will be the rest day, I don’t think we will have the rest. We have to train more for the remaining matches."
