Brazil work overtime to beat the Netherlands in five fantastic sets

Marlon celebrates a key win for Brazil
Rotterdam, the Netherlands, June 27, 2010 - Defending World League champions Brazil completed the double against the Netherlands with a thrilling come-from-behind victory 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-10) on Sunday in front of more than 4,000 fans who got their full monies worth with more than two-and-an-half hours of riveting Volleyball.

The Netherlands started with the same players than Saturday while Brazil started with outside hitter Dante Amaral in place for Murilo Endres and middle blocker Sidão on for Lucas Saatkamp. Also setter Marlon keeps his place after his good performance in game one. Both teams started consistently early on but with a nice kill block from Brazilian setter Marlon on Dutch outside hitter Jeroen Rauwerdink made the score 8-6 for Brazil at the first technical time out. The Dutch were able to make a few good kill blocks to retake the lead at 13-9 before closing in on the set at 19-15. Marlon and Visotto returned to the Brazilian lineup but they could not prevent the Netherlands from taking the first set with 25-19.

The Netherlands continued to test the Brazilian defence and block with high and powerful attacks in the second set. Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende substituted middle blocker Sidão for Lucas Saatkamp, but the Dutch kept their early lead 8-6 before leading 16-15 at the second technical time out. The Netherlands were capable of putting Brazil under pressure from the serving line and with the side out of Brazil under control the Dutch were able to take a 19-16 lead. On the serve of outside hitter Jeroen Rauwerdink, Brazil struggled in side out leading to the score of 23-19, but Brazil didn’t give up and get back to 23-22. But on a Dutch set point Brazilian captain Giba steps over the serving line while hitting a serve and the Dutch take a 2-0 lead (25-23).

In the third set it was again the Netherlands who took a quick lead and at the first technical time out lead 8-6. The Netherlands stretched the lead to 12-9, at which point Rezende substituted captain Giba for Murillo Endres. Brazil took the lead for the first time in the set at 18-17 before, with the score at 20-20, it was time for the “big points”. Brazil showed that they knew how to handle the situation. With good blocking and defence, they created chances in attack to take the set 25-22.

In the fourth set Brazil took a quick lead 8-5 thanks to good passing and convincing attacks. With more control in passing thanks to outside hitters Dante Amaral, Murilo Endres, and libero Mario Brazil start to take advantage of the Netherlands tiredness. With quick attacks to the outside and a lot of pressure in the middle by especially Lucas Saatkamp, Brazil extended their lead to 16-12. With the score at 20-13, Dutch coach Peter Blangé substituted four players but the Brazilian lead was too much to overcome, Brazil taking the set 25-17.

In the decisive fifth set Brazil took the early initiative with good defence and blocking to lead 10-4 but the resilient Dutch team refused to go down without a fight in this set. With a final boost from the fantastic home crowd they made the gap smaller, but it was not enough to take the victory. With a last spike from outside hitter Murilo Endres Brazil took the final set 15-10 and with this the match 3-2.
