the biggest talent in Polish Volleyball, 26-year-old
Piotr Gruszka feels it’s about time he gained an
international senior medal with Poland. Playing
domestically with Italian side Adria Volley of Trieste,
Gruszka is a specialist server and has developed into a
tremendous blocker over the years.
Finishing fifth at the European Championships in Berlin
was a disappointment to this sporting perfectionist,
however, being named as the tournament’s ‘Best Spiker’
proved that it was through no fault of his own that the
Poles didn’t fair any better.
Standing at 206cm, Gruszka is one of the tallest players
in the Polish squad. Voted ‘Best Polish Player’ by the
Polish Volleyball Federation on three occasions, Gruszka
has easily fulfilled all of the promise he had once
displayed as a highly successful junior player.
Poland finished last year’s FIVB World League in ninth
position and, coming up against France, Bulgaria and
Japan in Pool B of the 2004 event, Gruszka will be
central to any success his nation may enjoy.
