Poland defeats Russia 3:0 to close account in Intercontinental Rounds
Poland exacted some revenge and satisfaction on Saturday by reversing the trend established on Firday night and defeating Volleyball giant Russia in straight sets. It was only Russia's second defeat in the 12 matches of the Intercontinental Round.
Wishing to go out in glory, Poland more than held their own against the formidable opponent in the first set, when they held the lead almost throughout. Russia hit the front at 20-17 but several rare mistakes, including one by the normally deadly accurate Khamouttskikh, allowed the visitors to regain the initiative and close out at 25-23.
Again the Poles were on the offensive in the second set and ran up a strong lead of five points. Russia responded to close the gap to two points at 19-17 before Nowak, Zagumny and Rybak combined to give Poland a 2-set lead.
The struggle for the vital third set was both dramatic and nervous, with each point a battle of attrition, and it took Poland until 31-29 to finally run off victorious. Poland finishes the Intercontinental Round with a 6-6 win-loss ratio.
Russian coach Guennadi Chilouline said he was not satisfied with some of the aspects of his team.
"We tried our reserve wing-spiker but he failed," he said. "I am also not satisfied with our reception. This is the main problem to solve before the final in Madrid."
Poland's Radoslaw Rybak was top scorer with 19 points, fifteen from attacks.
