Bulgaria completes double success
The Netherlands was not able to counter attack Bulgaria after yesterday's loss. After losing the first match the Netherland's had to improve on their reception of the powerful serving of the Bulgarians. Up to 15-15 in the first set they succeeded in doing that. Service scoring by Nikolov and the surprising spike of setter Ivanov Bulgaria dished up three points and gave Bulgaria the set 25-22. The Dutch found energy to try and stay in the second set. Well support by an enthusiastic crowd and the fantastic play of Gortzen and Schuil, whose match contribution of 29 points has rocketed him up to first place on the Best Scorer rankings, the Netherlands hitched on to the Bulgarians. But the Dutch let the second set slip away making too many service errors at the end.
Bulgaria maintained the initiative in the third set courtesy of the spiking from Nikolov and Konstantinov, who sits in third place on the Best Scorer rankings. But after Bontje put service pressure on the Bulgarian reception the Dutch started a revival and following two aces from Nummerdor and Schuil the home team wrapped up the third set, with Gortzen finishing the set in style by hard hitting the last point, and a sniff of a chance of victory was in the air.
However Bulgaria soon took advantage of another Netherlands slow start and jumped out to a 8-4 lead in the fourth set.
It was Gortzen that picked up his teammates again and drew the Netherlands level at 9-9 by an impressive kill block. The cross-court attacks of Schuil did the rest for the Dutch and set the game up for a tiebreaker.
The Dutch started the fifth set by making a few unforced errors that gave Bulgaria the advantage that they needed to settle the match. Gortzen tried to repair the damage but it was too little too late and Bulgaria wrapped up their second win of the weekend.
"I'm very happy with this victory," Bulgarian captain Nikolay Ivanov said. "This is very important for us in trying to reach the World League finals. We could have won by 3-0, but the Dutch improved a lot".
