01-Jun, start time: 14:07, end time: 16:07 - Attendance: 2,000
Cuba recovery not enough as the Netherlands steel five-set thriller.
Cuba started with a lot of spirit and put on a much better performance in the opening two sets than they did in yesterday's match. The Dutch didn't have any answers to the powerful serves and spikes of the Cubans as Cuba went ahead 15-21 before Aldazabal and Portuando finished the first set in style with power plays. The second set was a replica of the first with Cuba storming to a 2-0 set lead and it wasn't until the substitution of the Netherland's captain Nummerdor for Trommel that the Dutch were able to settle into the match from the beginning of the third set. Trommel played a key role and was influential in bringing his side back into the match, especially when his seven successive service points have the Netherlands the third set. The Dutch went on putting the pressure on the Cuban defense. Both teams fought very hard but it was the experience of Gortzen and Schuil that come through for the Dutch and supplied some crucial points as the fourth set went to the homeside.
The final set, the tiebreaker, was a gem but the Dutch turned on the screws even more with Nummerdor clinching the winning point and denying Cuba only their second win of the tournament.
