Germany edge Portugal in five-set thriller
With both sides hunting for their first win of the tournament the match was a spectacle with both sides desperate in attack and defence.
The match started very tight with the attack much better than the defense but Portugal got off to the better start just pipping Germany in the first set 25-23 In the middle of the set the home side lost concentration at decisive moments falling five points behind Germany at 18-23 but with the excellent service of Jorge Alves, more aggression and better blocks Portugal recorded seven straight points and won the set.

Hugo Caspar kept Portugal in the game with some tremendous spikes and was close to leading his team to second and fourth set victories but Germany's determination held strong for their first victory in Pool B.

With more confidence and the good serving of Nuno Pinheiro, Portugal held a seven-point lead in the middle of the third set,and with Gaspar and Joao José huge in defense they finished off the set.
