Greece hold off determined Japan
Greece overcame jetlag from their 27-hour trip to Japan from Athens to pip Japan 3:2 and continue their impressive form against the Asian nation in World League 2003 having registered their third consecutive win.
Middle blockers Theodoros Chatziantoniou and Antonios Tsakiropoulos were always prsent on the block at crucial points for Greece, especially in the second and third sets. Setter Vasileios Kounetas also played smartly with composure to give Greece plenty of variety in attack.
Greece had to fight hard against the host country, especially in the fifth set. Japan showed plenty of courage to come back from 2-1 down to win the fourth set. However Japan's ace spiker, Takahiro Yamamoto was badly off form and proved ineffective in attack to the great disappointment of coach Mikiyasu Tanaka and the local fans. It was Greece's determination and fighting spirit which saw them prevail by wrapping up the fifth and final set 15:12.
Three consecutive defeats against Greece leave Japan with a 1-4 win-loss record and with littlke chance of heading to Madrid for the World League finals.
