Brazil are first finalists of World Grand Prix 2011 with straight sets victory against Russia

Macau, China, August 27, 2011 – World No. 1 Brazil remained unbeaten after a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-23) win over Russia in the semi-final of the 2011 World Grand Prix at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Saturday. 

Ekaterina Gamova from Russia tops all the scorers with a contribution of 17 points, while the Brazil star player Thaisa Menezes earned 15 points for her team. 

The game kicked off with a point-by-point pattern and reached a 8-8 tie. However, Gamova’s well-known tip-over spikes looked unstoppable and led to a 17-13 cushion for Russia. Brazilians relied on powerful and fast spikes from two wings and was the first one to reach 20 points. Russian has achieved to a 22-21 lead with two aggressive serve from reserve player Vera Ulyakina, however the Brazilians’ solid defense and skillful attack tactic brought them the first set victory. 

Obviously excited by the first set difficult success, Brazilians demonstrated all-rounded performance, particularly with solid blocking and powerful smashes, to achieve an 8-2 lead. Even gunners from Russia remained as sharp as in the first set, Brazilians were clearly in the correct rhythm and a combined effort by Natalia Pereira Natalia and captain Fabiana Claudino closed the second set for Brazil. 

Brazil continued their dominance in the very beginning of the third set, but again, Russian captain Gamova cheered up the whole team by a solid block and fierce attack. Another Russian powerhouse spiker Natalya Goncharova followed Gamova to break through Brazil’s block with her aggressive spikes and took Russia to a 22-15 7-point advantage. Nevertheless, Brazilians performed one of the biggest turnaround in this year final with everything they could – solid blocking, aggressive spikes and unbeatable floor defense – whatever best skills you could imagine in volleyball court. The 3,400 spectators sent their most enthusiastic applause to Brazilian players who entered tomorrow final with such an amazing 10-1 run from the back.
