China's head coach Chen Zhonghe

Chen Zhonghe, China head coach

"It was a fair match and a good match. Since it was the first match for us, I think we played relatively well, especially some of the young players who are playing in a big competition for the first time.

"I'm happy that we played courageously. We expected a tough match against Azerbaijan because we played the twice before and won 3-2 and 3-1, so we have lost sets to them before. Therefore, it was not a surprise to lose the second set against them today.

"They have some good players in their team and I think it was a credit to our team that we played well against such a good team."

Faig Garayev, Azerbaijan head coach

"It was our first match of the championship and the schedule was not kind to us because we had to open against China, who are the Olympic champions.

"I think if we met them later on in the tournament, maybe third or fourth match, we would have a better chance to win. To play the Olympic champions in your first match is a very difficult task.

"But I can't say we didn't play well. We played well but we were not able to make the most of our chances to win the match.

"We now have more difficult matches coming up but our main aim is to qualify for the second round."
