Team profile

For the new Olympic cycle Puerto Rico enlisted the help of veteran coach Carlos Cardona, who is also the coach to the Puerto Rico men’s national team. A third-straight FIVB World Championship qualification, a silver medal at the NORCECA Championships and a shock victory over USA in the Pan American Cup, helping Puerto Rico win the bronze medal and a spot in the Grand Prix for the first time, have been the highlights of his tenure thus far as Puerto Rico look to improve their performance on the international stage.

The side qualified for this year’s tournament following victories over Canada, Jamaica and the Bahamas in the NORCECA qualifying stage. An improvement on their 15th-place finish last time around is what Puerto Rico will be looking for this time as they continue to jostle for position in the increasingly competitive global Volleyball arena.

Last year, in their debut at the FIVB World Grand Prix, Puerto Rico won just one game, against Russia, and only won once this year as well, against Thailand, to finish 11th overall. The goal for the team is to get back into the top 10 teams in the world.

Coach profile

Carlos Cardona began his career as coach of Puerto Rico in 2009 at the FIVB World Grand Prix.

Previously a club coach in Argentina, Italy and Puerto Rico he made the transition to international level and now has 26 matches under his belt for the national side.

His most famous win with the team so far was the shock victory over USA in the Pan American Cup, helping them win the bronze medal and a spot in the Grand Prix, a first for Puerto Rico.
