Team profile

Kenya qualified for the 2010 FIVB World Championship following victory in Africa Group C, where they scored straight-set wins over Cameroon, Tunisia and Senegal.

The team consists of players drawn mainly from the three leading Kenyan teams, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Commercial Bank who are the current holders, first runners-up and second runners-up respectively of the African Women’s Club Championships, held in Mauritius last May.

It is a relatively youthful side consisting mainly of maturing and upcoming players with a few experienced faces. They stand a good chance of performing better than in previous international competitions such as the Olympics, the FIVB World Championship and the FIVB World Cup in which it has won just one match to date (against Egypt, one of their major continental rivals).

The team is coached by Mr. Hidehiro Irisawa from Japan and assisted by Mr. David Lungaho, the coach of Kenya Prisons who was in charge of the team during the qualifier.

Coach profile

Hidehiro Irisawa became Kenya’s coach in May this year with the World Championships the first international outing for him.

The Japanese coach has been involved in the sport for over 25 years and will be familiar to a number of the Kenyan players already, having been the national youth team coach in recent years.

Additionally, the 56-year-old is a former Volleyball player so he will bring years of experience to the side.
