Team profile

Costa Rica are taking part in the FIVB Women’s World Championship for a second consecutive time after finishing 17th in the 2006 edition, when they scored one victory over Kenya. Under the guidance of coach Braulio Godinez, they booked their ticket to Japan in NORCECA’s last-chance saloon by sweeping Trinidad and Tobago in a play-off competition held in Mexico in August 2009.

Winners of the last 10 tournaments and 13 of the last 14, the Costa Rican women have been a major powerhouse of the Central American zone, which comprises seven countries. Indeed the team is fresh from winning a bronze medal at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico, its first ever podium finish in the multi-sport quadrennial event.

Costa Rica rely on a strong attack in which sisters Verania (outside hitter) and Angela Willis (middle blocker) are the core of the team and will be playing in their second World Championships.

Confidence should be relatively high after winning gold at the Centro-American Volleyball Championships however, bearing in mind this is only Costa Rica’s second appearance at an FIVB international tournament, any victory like over Kenya four years ago will be significant. As part of their preparation for the FIVB Women’s World Championship Japan 2010, Costa Rica travelled to a specially prepared training camp in Chinese Taipei.

Coach profile

Braulio Godinez has been the coach of Costa Rica since 1995 and under his guidance the side has maintained its dominance as a powerhouse in Central America.

Since his appointment Godinez has taken the team to the Women’s Senior Central American Cup title for five straight editions, extending their winning streak to ten consecutive titles going back to 1993.

Braulio was also at the helm for Costa Rica during the 2006 World Championship when they won a five-setter against Kenya and took a set off Poland in Tokyo.
