Brazil coach Rezende: We played a 3-set match but felt like tie breaker

USA coach John Speraw and Brazil mentor Bernardo Rezende addressing the media after the match

Kyoto, Japan, November 20, 2013 - Brazil picked up their second win of the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Grand Champions Cup in Kyoto against a strong USA team. As Brazil’s captain Bruno Mossa Rezende noted, the 3–0 score was not an accurate indication of how close this match was.

Brazil captain Bruno Mossa Rezende: I think the result, 3–0, does not tell how hard this game was. It was a good game with long rallies. We know the US team had good defense and block, and we had patience to work the ball, with not so many mistakes in our attack and counter attack, and I think this was the key to our victory. Now we have difficult matches ahead in Tokyo, but I hope we can go on and play well, and win this competition.

Brazil player Mauricio Silva: It was a good game, but in the last part we had a hard time. But overall it was a good game.

Brazil coach Bernardo Rezende: We played a three set match but felt like tie breaker. We fought for each point… we had the advantage and they recovered, then they had the advantage and we recovered. This was a great match with systems working well on both sides. I’m still looking for Lucas’s service, but we managed to play without key weapons. Lucarelli and Mauricio have a heavy weight to carry, but they made me proud. But I need more from my leaders, and I’d like Lucas to be more competitive.

On facing Japan in Tokyo next: I didn’t see much of Japan, but while preparing to play Iran we watched Iran vs Japan, and while preparing to play the USA yesterday we watched them play Japan. It was a better Japan that we saw. […] We have to play consistently, and the trap we cannot fall into is that winning these two games does not give us anything. We need to start from zero.

USA captain Sean Rooney: Obviously that match was difficult for us. It was one of those matches where you almost feel better when they crush you. We know what we could have done to make it better, to turn things in our favor. You almost want to start practicing right away to try and fix it. We know what we have to do, and now it’s time to move on and play the next match.

What would he work on if he were to practice right now: Actually what sticks out to me was in the second set when we got going, even though we were winning, we were almost scoring and it crept into our sideout game a little. Right now we need to talk about that. But this sort of match can light a fire under you, and we’re gonna be right there in the next game.

USA coach John Speraw: Well I’m heartened to hear Sean say he wants to go practice right away. He’s right, being close is more difficult and we’re frustrated right now. […] There were a lot of opportunities we had that we didn’t take advantage of but it was a tight match. Brazil made plays when it mattered and that is why they won.

On what Brazil did better: I thought the whole match was fairly heated. Really Brazil executed more from the service line, and I think their transition swing opportunities too, but I’ll have to go back and check the video on that to be sure. It was a close match, almost a deuce set all the way through.
