The 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar will feature a FIVB record $10.2million in prizemoney, 10Grand Slam events, and inaugural FIVBGrand
Slam Final, 11 Open tournaments and four age-group FIVBWorld Championships including the first U17 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. The
schedule starts in April and concludes in December. This year marks the 27
anniversary of the first FIVB beach volleyball event held February 17-22, 1987 in
Riode Janeiro, Brazil. The goldmedal waswonbyUSA’s Sinjin Smith/Randy Stoklos. Themen’sWorld Tour began in1989, thewomen’s in1992. Smith/Stoklos
were the champions of the inaugural season in 1989-90.
−− The international beach volleyball circuit will visit 20 sites in 16 countries over an eight-month period
−− With the 2014 calendar featuring 21 men’s and 23 women’s events within the African, Asian, European and South American confederations, the FIVB
international calendar will offer $10.2million in prizemoney
−− All 10 FIVBWorld Tour Grand Slam events and the Grand Slam Final will be combined events for women andmen. Seven of the FIVBOpen events will be
double-gender and twowill bemen only and twowill bewomenonly.
−− For the first time in FIVB beach volleyball history, two FIVBGrand Slam events have been assigned total prizemoney of $1million each. The two 2014 FIVB
Grand Slamwith $1million purseswill be the events in TheHague, theNetherlands and in LongBeach, California, USA.
−− Women’s only Open tournaments will be in the Czech Republic (Prague) and Thailand (Phuket). TheMen’s only Open tournaments will be inQatar (Doha)
and France (La Reunion).
−− The only newGrand Slam venue this year will be in Brazil (location and date TBC in second half of season)
−− The FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events will return to 2013 venues in China (Shanghai), Russia (Moscow), Germany (Berlin), Switzerland (Gstaad), the
Netherlands (TheHague) and Poland (Stare Jablonki)
−− Gstaad has staged 14 FIVBwomen’s and 13 FIVBmen’s beach volleyball events as well as hosting the FIVBWorld Championships in 2007. The Haguewill
host the 2015 FIVBWorld Championships while Berlin hosted the event in 2005, Gstaad hosted in 2007 and Stare Jablonki presented in the FIVBWorld
Championships in 2013.
−− The FIVBWorld Tour Grand Slam eventswill also return to former venues inNorway (Stavanger) andAustria (Klagenfurt)
−− Stavanger has hosted13men’s and10women’s FIVB events up to2011 including the2009 FIVBWorldChampionshipswhileKlagenfurt has hosted16men
and 12women’s FIVB events up to 2012 including the 2001 FIVBWorldChampionships
−− The opening event on the 2014 FIVBWorld Tour calendar for the first time in tour historywill be the double-gender FIVB FuzhouOpen onApril 22-27. The
first 2014 FIVBGrand Slam eventwill be the Shanghai Grand SlamonApril 29-May asChinawill host four FIVB international tournaments in2013, including
the FIVBWorld Tour Open inXiamen onOctober 7-12 and the 2014NanjingYouthOlympicGames.
−− The2014 FIVBWorld TourGrand Slam eventswill conclude in Poland (Stare Jablonki Grand SlamonAugust 19-24 tobe followedby the inaugural $1million
FIVBGrand Slam Final (date and location TBC). The FIVBOpen schedulewill end for the second straight year in South Africa (DurbanOpen) with a double
gender event onDecember 9-14.
−− For the first time in beach volleyball history, the FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar will also feature FIVBWorld Championships in four age-groups for players
under the age of 23, under the age of 17, under the age of 21 and under the age of 19. FIVB age-groupworlds for U21 andU19 have been held for over
a decade, but 2014will be the second for U23 and first for U17. Myslowice, Polandwill again host the 2013 FIVB U23World Championships June 10-15,
while Acapulco, Mexicowill host the FIVB U17World Championships July 15-20, Larnaka, Cyprus will host the FIVB U21World Championships July 23-27
and Porto, Portugal will host the 2014 FIVBU19WorldChampionships July 29-August 3.
