Cyprus returns to theworld stage of international beach volleyball this year when it hosts the FIVBU21 FIVB Beach Volleyball WorldChampionships. The 14
th
annual double-gender age-group event will be held July 22-27 in Larnaka as the FIVB now has an unprecedented four age-groupWorld Championships for
beach volleyball held annually.
While the Cyprus Volleyball Federation has hosted several FIVB Challenger and Satellite events, this will be just the second event held in Larnaka as the city
presented the 2012 FIVBU19WorldChampionshipswhichwerewon by amen’s tandem from Poland and awomen’s duo from Lithuania.
Long thedeveloping sandof FIVBBeachVolleyball next gen stars, last year’s FIVBU21WorldChampionshipswereheld inUmag, Croatia. Umaghadalsohosted
the2011 FIVBU19WorldChampionships. TheU21age-groupWorldChampionships havebeenheldevery year since2001.Winning themen’s FIVBU21World
Championships last year inUmagwereBrazil’sGustavoCarvalhaes/AllisonCittadinwhile thewomen’s FIVBU21WorldChampionships goldmedal waswonby
Poland’s JagodaGruszczynska/Katarzyna Kociolek.
In the first 13 years of the FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball World Championships, Brazil has garnered themost final four placements, most medals andmost gold
medals in both genders. InU21men’s competition, Brazil has 10 final four placements and nine total medals including four goldmedals. Other countrieswith
men’s goldmedals have been Italy, Poland and Spainwith two each andwith one each have beenCanada, Latvia and theUkraine.
In the first 13 years of the U21 women’s championships, Brazil has been evenmore dominant with 11 final four placements and 10 total medals including
six goldmedals. Other countries withwomen’s goldmedals have been Poland and Switzerlandwith two each andwith one each have been the Netherlands,
Russia and theUnited States.
In2012 inHalifax, Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiakmovedup thepodium to capture thegoldmedal afterwinning the silvermedal in2011. For thewomen,
Switzerland’s Nina Betschart came backwith new partner Anna Vergé-Dépré towin the goldmedal again in thewomen’s competition.
In 2011, Ukraine’s Sergiy Popov/Valeriy Samoday became only the second team in FIVB history towin both age-groupWorldChampionships as they alsowon
the youth title in 2009 inAlanya, Turkey. On thewomen’s competition, Switzerland’s Nina Betschart/Joana Heidrich surprised the field to give their country its
first goldmedal in the event.
The 2010Alanya eventmarked the first-time that a player won two BeachVolleyballWorldChampionships in the same season as USA’s Summer Ross teamed
with Tara Roenicke to capture Junior title inmid-September after the 17-year-oldAmericanhad captured the FIVBworld title for players under the age of 19 at
the end of July in Portugal by topping the podiumwith Jane Croson in Porto.With Ross’ two goldmedal finishes, the United States joins Brazil inwinning all
threewomen’sWorldChampionship titles – senior, junior and youth. Brazil is the only country towin all threemen’sWorldChampionships.
In 2009 at Blackpool, England, Poland became the second country to sweep the goldmedals at a single U21WorldChampionship. The Polish pairs ofMichal
Kadziola/JakubSzalankiewicz andMonikaBrzostek/KingaKolosinska topped thepodiumbydefeatingmenandwomen teams fromBrazil and theNetherlands,
respectively, for the goldmedals. Brazil swept the goldmedals at the 2001 and 2006 FIVBU21WorldChampionships. It was the secondWorldChampionship
goldmedal for Kadziola and Szalankiewicz as the Polish tandemwon the U19 crown in 2007 at Myslowice, Poland. Brzostek placed third at the 2008 junior
worlds at BrightonwithKarolina Sowala.
RussianAlexandra Shiryaeva, who competed in Beijing 2008Olympic Games, captured the goldmedal at the 2003women’s U21WorldChampionships with
AnnaMorozova. The Schwaiger sisters (Doris and Stefanie), who placed fifth at the Beijing Summer Games for Austria, claimed the bronzemedal at the 2005
U21 championships.
FrancescoGiontella and PaoloNicolai of Italywonback-to-backU21 titles in2007 (Modena) and2008 (Brighton). At the 2006U19 inBermuda, Giontella and
Nicolai claimed the silvermedal with compatriotsMatteo and Paolo Ingrosso placing third for Italy. The Ingrossos captured the 2008U21 bronzemedal.
Marleen van Iersel realizedher goldmedal aspirations at a FIVBU21WorldChampionshipevent as she teamedwithDutchpartnerDaniëlleRemmers to capture
the 2008 U21 title for women. Van Iersel was playing in her ninth FIVB U21/U19world finale since first competing internationally for the first time in 2003.
A bronzemedal winner at the previous twoworlds for players under the age of 21withMarloesWesselink, van Iersel was teamingwith Remmers on a FIVB
podium for the second time as the pair was second at the 2006U19s in Bermuda. Remmers also placed second in 2009 at the U21s withMichelle Stiekema,
whowas also second in2008with Sophie vanGestel.
Larnaka is the third largest city on the southern coast of Cyprus behind Nicosia and Limassol. Larnaka has a population of 72,000 and is the island’s second
largest commercial port and an important tourist resort. The island’s largest airport, Larnaka International Airport is located on the outskirts of the city to the
south. The city of Larnaka iswell known for its picturesque seafront, which includes rows of palm trees. LarnakaMarina is one of the four official entry points,
by sea, toCyprus.
