Laciga picks Emanuel and Alison to claim world title

Paul Laciga won FIVB Swatch World Championship silver in 1997 with his brother Martin and in 2005 with Sascha Heyer

Rome, Italy, June 12, 2011 - Two-time FIVB Swatch World Championship silver medallist Paul Laciga has picked Emanuel and Alison to win the 2011 edition of the world's premier beach volleyball event outside of the Olympic Games, which starts on Monday in Rome, Italy.

Laciga, who retired after his second Olympic Games appearance in 2008 and having won World Championships silvers in 1997 and 2005 says in his FIVB blog "It is very hard to pick a favourite and is not as clear as it has been in past years. However, saying that, I think Emanuel and Alison will win the men’s title. I hope Phil and Todd can play as they also have a chance. Phil was injured in Beijing so a quick recovery could see them back in contention. Those two teams are always contenders in finals and have met many times in the past, putting on a great display almost all the time.

"The Swiss men also have a chance for a medal. I talked to many people before the season started about who they think is the best men’s Swiss team at the moment but no one could say for certain. Sascha Heyer and Sebastian Chevallier have had some great results in the past few weeks and I am a fan of Sascha’s new partner. Sebastian has come to the Tour for the first time this year and seems very relaxed, sometimes more so than he is in training. He plays like he has been around for ten years and from what I’ve seen so far he deals with the pressure well.

"As for my brother Martin, I know he can play better than the results are showing. For him, the extra day for qualifying makes it harder. He has been playing for a long time now so the extra few matches can be a disadvantage. But at the World Championships there are no qualification matches so perhaps now is his time to shine and maybe repeat what he and I did in 1997 when we won silver. I hope that we begin to see Swiss teams winning medals regularly again as it was a few years ago."

The FIVB Swatch World Championships Rome 2011 powered by smart start at 11.30 on Monday continuing until the final on Sunday at the Foro dItalico.
