Level I coaches course in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

Lausanne, December 1, 2008 – The city of Santa Cruz in Bolivia was the venue for the FIVB level I coaches course which came to an end 28^th of November after 13 days of hard work. The course was originally planned last September, but due to domestic problems the course had to be rescheduled. The Argentinean course director, Mr. Carlos Diaz Bancalari and the course instructor Mr. Edouardo Bellmann also from Argentina were both very satisfied with the course conditions and they stated that here was an excellent collaboration among all the stakeholders, the National Federation as well as the Olympic Committee officials. The end results revealed that 26 new coaches fulfilled all the conditions and are now readily available for developing Volleyball in Bolivia.

Lausanne, November 28, 2008 - A Volleyball Cooperation Programme teachers' course was recently held in Katmandu, the capital city of Nepal, nestling in the Himalayas at an altitude of 1,400 metres.

Twenty-seven keen participants followed the course from November 6 to 11 led by instructor Mr. Hussein Imam Ali from Qatar.

The organization of the course was excellent due to the Nepal Volleyball Association’s hard work. Their initiative in inviting important national authorities to the opening and closing ceremonies helped spark major interest with the national TV company and media.

The guest of honour at the opening ceremony was Mr. Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, President of the National Olympic Committee and the guest of honour at the closing ceremony was Mr. Gopal Shakya, Minister for Youth and Sports. The ceremony finished with a flourish with the Little Angels School Band who performed charming traditional songs and dances.

Volleyball moves forward in Belize

Lausanne, November 28, 2008 - It was a pleasure for Mr. Jivko Jetchev, one of the most experienced FIVB instructors, to return this month to Belize City, on his second Volleyball mission in the country since 1995. The mission was to conduct a Level I Coaches Course in the Central American country bordered on one side by the Caribbean Sea and on the other side by Mexico and Guatemala.

The course was well organised by the Belize Volleyball Association and the popularity of Volleyball in this region is set to rise owing to the initiatives taken by its current President, Mr. Allan Sharp.

This useful course has provided Belize with 19 new coaches, 18 men and one woman, who will integrate into the National Federation’s new strategy to develop the future of Volleyball in Belize.

Panama favoured to win first men's competition of FIVB World Championships

Managua, Nicaragua, November 26, 2008 – The beginning of the 2010 FIVB World Championships get underway on Saturday with the NORCECA E men’s second-round tournament involving seven teams from Central America. The 55th-ranked Panama is considered a heavy favourite to win the round-robin competition which runs from November 29 to December 5. The 62nd-ranked Costa Rica and 81st-ranked Honduras are considered to have marginal chances. The other teams participating in the event are Nicaragua (ranked 92nd) and Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize.

Marte announces FIVB President’s plans for underdeveloped countries

Managua, Nicaragua, November 29, 2008 - Cristobal Marte, First Executive Vice President of FIVB, on Saturday spoke of new FIVB President Jizhong Wei's priority of promoting Volleyball and Beach Volleyball in underdeveloped countries. Marte spoke during the opening ceremony of the NORCECA E men’s second round of the World Championships at Polideportivo España in the capital of Nicaragua. "I want to welcome all the participating teams in this first men’s tournament of the 2010 World Championships on behalf of President Wei," said Marte. "One of the immediate goals of our President is to provide support to those countries that don’t have the financial resources."

Panama survive in another five-set battle

Managua, Nicaragua, November 30, 2008 - Three-time defending Central American champions Panama wiped out a two-set deficit and prevailed in a five-set battle over El Salvador on Day Two of the Norceca-E second round of the FIVB Men’s World Championship. The score was 20-25, 12-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-12. For the second day in a row both teams were extended to the limit with opposite results. Twenty-four hours earlier, Panama had lost to Guatemala while the Salvadorian squad had edged host Nicaragua. In the other two matches Sunday, Guatemala recorded its second victory by defeating Belize in straight sets, 25-17, 26-24, 25-21, and Costa Rica also improved to 2-0 by defeating Honduras 25-23, 25-13, 25-15.

Panama's Remon expects to keep winning streak alive

Managua, Nicaragua, November 28, 2008 - Panamanian coach Jose Remon is confident about keeping alive his team's streak of victories when the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship NORCECA E round starts this Saturday, but a few other colleagues have different ideas about the outcome of the competition. The seven-team round-robin event doubles up as the Central American Cup which Remon's squad has won the past three editions. The NORCECA E second round men's tournament marks the begining of what are expected to be the most succesful World Championships in FIVB history with 215 countries taking part in the 68 elimination rounds and finals.

Lausanne, May 13, 2008 - The FIVB Board of Administration agreed on the final date for National Teams wanting to register for the 2010 FIVB World Championships and the start of the Preliminary Rounds at an extraordinary meeting in Lausanne on Monday. The closing date for registration for the tournament has been set at June 30, 2008. The Drawing of Lots is scheduled for September 2008 and the start of the World Championships' Preliminary Rounds will take place immediately after this.

Guatemala upset Panama in opening match

Managua, Nicaragua, November 29, 2008 - Guatemala recorded a major surprise in the first match of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship NORCECA E round by edging favourite Panama in a five-set thriller, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 34-36, 15-9. Eric Calvillo came from the bench to score an ace sealing the first victory for Guatemala over Panama since 1999. The Guatemalans wasted nine match-point chances in the fourth set, but recovered and dominated in the tie-breaker. In the other two matches of Day One, Costa Rica dispatched Belize in straight sets (25-15, 25-22, 25-17), and in the nightcap El Salvador edged host Nicaragua 25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13.

FIVB confirms implementation of anti-doping rules in line with WADA regulations

Lausanne, November 28, 2008 – The FIVB can confirm that its revised anti-doping rules that ensure a consistent out-of-competition testing program are in line with World Anti-Doping Agency regulations, following the release of a WADA compliance report. The FIVB now has in place an existing out-of-competition testing contract and efficient out-of-competition testing program which will be strictly implemented and enforced in the coming year, with testing able to be carried out anywhere in the world without notice. The FIVB has submitted its code-compliant anti-doping rules to WADA.

Lang of Beijing, China, cited the desire for a coaching position that offers more flexibility to spend time with her family as a major factor in her decision. “At this moment in my life, family comes first and I wish more flexibility to spend time with them,” Lang said on her decision to leave USA Volleyball. “I prefer a club Volleyball season that lasts five months so that I can spend the other seven months of the year with them.

Level I coaches course conducted on the island of Comoros

Lausanne, 21 November 2008 – The Volleyball Federation of Comoros is currently running a level I coaches course in the capital Moroni where 19 coaches are studying to obtain their official FIVB coaching diploma. The island of Comoros lies in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa is one of the smallest nations on the African continent and the Federation was affiliated to the FIVB in 1982. The course director, Mr. Abdoulaye Baba Sy from Senegal and the course instructor Mr. Mostafa Ahchouche from Morocco are satisfied the conditions under which the course is run and they are sure that this course will serve as an important part of the federation future development. It is interesting to note that the name Moroni comes from the word "Oundroni" which means well-being or happiness and we can say that this was definitely the case with the Level I Coaches Course.
