Coming soon: Beach Volleyball 4x4 at the World Beach Games in Qatar

Beach Volleyball 4X4 will be a highlight of the World Beach Games

Doha, Qatar, October 7, 2019 – Starting on Friday, Qatar will play host to the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games featuring four-a-side beach volleyball from October 12 to 16.

While the 4x4 version of beach volleyball was played as far back as the 1930s, when beach volleyball was first played on the California coast, now the exciting discipline has its own set of Official FIVB Rules. Each team consists of six players, four of which are in play at any given moment, following a specified serving order, but otherwise positioning freely on the court. Four substitutions per team per set are allowed following rules similar to those in indoor volleyball. Coaching is also part of the game.

Eight national teams per gender will take part in the tournament in Doha. They are evenly split into two round-robin pools, where they will compete for the best starting positions in the single elimination bracket, consisting of quarterfinals (A1 v B4, A2 v B3, B2 v A3 and B1 v A4), semifinals, bronze and gold medal matches.

The pool stage will be played on Saturday and Sunday on two competition courts at the Gharafa Beach Sports Complex. The quarterfinals will follow on Monday, October 14, and the semifinals on Tuesday, October 15. The medal matches will wrap up the tournament on October 16 at the magnificent Katara Cultural Village.

In the men’s competition, hosts Qatar will be joined by teams from Australia, Chile, Germany, Indonesia, Mozambique, Poland, USA, representing all five continental confederations.

Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Gambia, Nigeria, USA and Vanuatu will compete for honours in the women's competition.
