Juliana and Utami shock first seeds as Daegu pool play starts

Utami and Juliana celebrate winning in Daegu
Daegu, Korea, July 12, 2019 – Dhita Juliana and Putu Utami and defeated first seeds Eva Freiberger and Valerie Teufl as the women-only 1-Star Daegu FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event main draw began on Friday. 

It is the third consecutive season that Daegu has hosted a World Tour tournament and it will run from July 11-14 with US$5,000 on offer to the winners. 

Indonesians Juliana and Utami beat the Austrians 2-0 (23-21, 21-14), and followed up with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) to ensure they top their pool. 

In Pool B second seeds Russia’s Alexandra Moiseeva and Ekaterina Syrtseva also won two from two, but Israel’s Sofia Starikov and Anita Dave beat third seeds Stephanie Wiesmeyr and Anja Dörfler to take top spot in Pool C. 

In 2017 Japan’s Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami topped the women's podium before Australia’s Phoebe Bell and Jessyka Ngauamo won gold in 2018.
