Kurek, Heynen pick up prestigious awards for amazing Polish season

Vital Heynen and Bartosz Kurek, moments after Poland beat Brazil in Turin for the title at the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship.
Lausanne, Switzerland, January 7, 2019 - Bartosz Kurek, who led Poland to an incredible back-to-back title at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship has become the first volleyball player to ever win the prestigious 'Superchampion' prize awarded each year by Przeglad Sportowy, Poland's oldest sports newspaper, which goes to Poland's athlete of the year.

Przeglad Sportowy has been running the Sports Personality of the Year award since 1926 and no volleyball player had ever won the prize until the 30-year-old opposite who was named MVP for his role in Poland's world title last year stepped up.

Poland's men's volleyball team won the coveted Team of the Year award and their Belgian coach Vital Heynen, who masterminded the team's success last year, was named Coach of the Year.

The 49-year-old stepped up to the podium to receive the award and greeted those present at the ceremony in Polish with his catchphrase 'I say, you listen'.
