Vanuatu aiming to benefit from Bergmann coaching

Vanuatu's players have been developing their game under FIVB coach Michel Bergmann
Lausanne, Switzerland, November 5, 2018 – The Vanuatu Volleyball Federation has recently enjoyed three months coaching support from FIVB coach Michel Bergmann.

The German represented his nation at volleyball for six years before he moved outdoors and played for four years on the German Beach Volleyball Tour.

He was appointed as a coaching support to Vanuatu under Projects Platform 2017. The Projects Platform enables National Federation countries to benefit from the help of skilled coaches with their salaries and transport paid for by the FIVB.

Bergmann helped develop a schools programme that featured 120 students training for two hours a week at U14, U16 and U18 age grade. He also worked with local coaches, and offered support and the benefit of his experience to introduce new skill and technique training drills. However, he identified the need to bridge the gap between age-grade and senior players.

“Improving the quality transfer from youths to seniors is most important, especially because there are so many kids in the Vanuatu school program and they are very talented,” Bergmann said.

He also coached the women’s beach volleyball team of Miller Pata and Sherysyn Toko who compete on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and are aiming to compete at the Hamburg 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship.

Pata has been a long-time feature on the World Tour, and recently won bronze at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, but Toko only made her World Tour debut at the Qinzhou 3-Star tournament in October.

The men’s beach volleyball team are also being coached by Bergmann in preparation for the FIVB Continental Cup and Pacific Games.

For the men’s national volleyball team, Bergmann has worked to bring players from the three main islands together by holding trials that has resulted in a long list from which the squad for the 2019 Pacific Games will be chosen.

“With such great talent and knowledge the Vanuatu Volleyball Federation is very grateful and honoured to have such an experienced coach come to Vanuatu,” VVF president Debbie Masauvakalo said.

“He will further improve and develop the skills and mind set of the beach volleyball players and local coaches, thank you FIVB for your support.”
