Belgrade pays tribute to Serbia’s world champions

Serbia's victorious women were greeted by 10,000 fans outside Belgrade's City Hall

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 23, 2018 – Serbia’s World Championship celebrations showed no sign of slowing down after they met their biggest fans and country’s leader in Belgrade.

Zoran Terzic’s team won their first world title after they defeated Italy 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) in the Japan 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship gold medal match on Saturday.

On Monday Terzic and Serbia Volleyball Federation president Zoran Gajic led the team delegation when they received a presidential welcome from Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic in his official residence.

The players discussed the match and tournament with Mr Vucic and presented him and his staff with signed balls.

In the evening the team appeared on the balcony of Belgrade City Hall in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans, alongside Belgrade’s Lord Mayor, Professor Zoran Radojicic and members of his City Assembly.
The team hit signed balls into the crowd to ensure that some of their fans returned home with a much-sought after prize. There was also a video message from Bojana Milenkovic, who was injured during the World Championship and had to return home early.

Wing spiker Brankica Mihajlovic summed up the mood in the team when she said, “everything went well on and off the court. This is a special moment for all of us and we are enjoying it with all our hearts.”
