Wagner Memorial showcases stars in prelude to World Championship

Poland (here celebrating win over Russia in this year's Volleyball Nations League) host Russia, France and Canada in the Wagner Memorial tournament, as all four prepare for the 2018 FIVB World Championship.
Lausanne, Switzerland, August 23, 2018 - Four of the teams who are expected to play a critical role in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship next month gather this weekend in Krakow, as Poland host Russia, France and Canada for the 16th Hubert Wagner Memorial Tournament.

The competition is a three-day round robin tournament which functions as a full test for all four teams just before they head off to the World Championship.

The World Championship, featuring the top 24 teams of the globe begins on 10 September in cities across Italy and Bulgaria, culminating three weeks later with the final in Turin on 30 September. It is the first time in the 69-year history of the competition that it is jointly hosted by two countries.

Hosts Poland won last year's Wagner Memorial, which featured the exact same teams as this year. Russia's Maxim Mikhaylov was named MVP in 2017.

Full details of this year's Wagner Memorial on the Hubert Wagner Foundation website.

Hubert Wagner (1941-2002) was a former Polish international and Mexico City 1968 Olympian. As a coach he led Poland to the 1974 FIVB World Championship title, followed by gold at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.
