The mighty fall, as VNL opening delivers stunners

The Netherlands have taken an early lead in the standings of the inaugural 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League after the opening week.

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 18, 2018 - Who would have thought that after the opening three days of the 2018 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League the unlikely sides of the Netherlands and Turkey would be the only two undefeated teams amongst the top 16 countries of the world participating in this inaugural competition?

The opening week produced some stunning results across the four pools, as coaches across the board experimented wildly with their lineups and gave fans around the world the chance to see a few new faces alongside some trusty old guard.

Here's the highlights of the opening weekend:

Indeed, after three rounds of play, the Netherlands and Turkey have taken an early lead at the top of the table as the only two undefeated - leaving the Dominican Republic, Italy and Argentina winless at the bottom, and everybody else in-between.
