Senegal find form to defeat Tunisia at World Champ qualifiers

 
Senegal recorded a memorable win over Tunisia
 
Lausanne, Switzerland, October 9, 2017 – Senegal showed great form and resilience to defeat Tunisia at the Japan 2018, FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship CAVB Qualifier on Monday.

Senegal beat Tunisia 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22) and in doing overcame the 27 places that separate them in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Rankings. 


The tournament doubles as the African Women’s Championship and is taking place at the Palais des Sports in Yaounde, Cameroon. It began on Saturday and the first round continues till October 11th. The medal matches take place on Saturday, October 14 and the top two will qualify for Japan 2018, which runs from September 29-October 20. 

Senegal’s win came after 101 minutes and they were led by captain Fatou Diouck and Sow Binetou, who finished as leading scorers with 18 points. 

Hosts Cameroon won their second match to keep alive their hopes of a second World Championship appearance after they reached Italy 2014. They defeated Algeria 3-1 (25-20, 25-9, 17-25, 25-10).

Defending champions Kenya made it three wins from three with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-12) victory over DR Congo. 

Kenya are chasing a first World Championship appearance since Japan 2010 having missed out on the Italy 2014 edition. They have won five of the last six African Championships and nine in total, more than any other country.
