Slovenia and Brazil break clear in standings of Women's U23 Worlds

Slovenia celebrate unbeaten run of three matches after overwhelming China in four sets at the 2017 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship in Ljubljana.

Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 12, 2017 - Hosts Slovenia and defending champions Brazil established themselves at the top of the standings in their respective pools after three days of pool play at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship here, following decisive wins that give both a huge advantage in the race for the semifinals.

In impressive manner and with yet another solid performance Slovenia handed China their first defeat in the tournament, remaining the only undefeated side in Pool A at Arena Stozice. The Dominican Republic, meanwhile -the only team to have won a medal in both previous editions of the competition- remained in contention despite being taken all the way by Argentina. And Egypt were once again sensational as they scored a historic first win by an African side in the history of the U23 Worlds when they outclassed Thailand in six sets.

Over at Hala Tivoli, meanwhile, Brazil are alone at the top of the standings of Pool B after knocking down Japan in five following an effort that was much harder than it looked on paper. Bulgaria also remained undefeated (but trail by a point) after a dramatic comeback win in seven from three sets down over Cuba. It looks like it may come down to a potential Balkan showdown between Bulgaria and Turkey on the last day of pool play for a ticket to the semis after Turkey shut out Kenya 4-0.

All matches in Ljubljana are played under a new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.

All teams take a day off on Wednesday, before action resumes on Thursday at both competition halls. There's two more rounds of pool play left, followed by semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
