Canada's Sharone Vernon-Evans: "This is all new to me"

Canada celebrates its victory over Italy

Antwerp, Belgium, June 18, 2017 – Sharone Vernon-Evans, who is just 18 years old, helped Canada defeat Italy 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-22) on Sunday.

Canada coach Stéphane Antiga:

Of course Canadian coach Antiga was happy with the three points. "We didn't start well, but we fought to come back. Vernon came in and scored some very important points for the team. It wasn't an easy game at all; Italy was playing good." And now Canada awaits the results of other teams like Belgium. "We shouldn't expect anything; we can only wait. We hope for positive results in our favor."

Sharone Vernon-Evans: "All new to me"
Vernon, only 18, substituted Hoag in the first set and stayed on the pitch for the rest of the game. "I was happy that I could help the team. This is all new to me, but I was supported a lot by the rest of the team."

Getting to the Final 6 would be superb to the youngster. "We did everything to get the best result possible, so now we can only hope that we did enough to go to Brazil." It's already clear that Vernon has a bright future.

Italian setter Simone Giannelli (setter Italy):
“We are a little bit disappointed. We played not so good. Too irregular. Too often a lot of misunderstandings. We go home and prepare the European Championships in august in Poland.”

Italian coach Blengini:
“For some situations, we had more solutions than yesterday. But it was not enough, we didn’t take all the opportunities. During this tournament there was not enough conviction and determination in my team.”
