European road to Argentina narrows down

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 6, 2017 - Italy, Belarus, Russia and Serbia all officially secured tickets to the 2017 FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship after qualifying to the semifinals of the age group European Championship in The Netherlands.

Another two spots to the World Championship from Europe are up for grabs on Saturday when The Netherlands take on Slovenia and Germany play Poland in the deciding 5-8 semifinals.

Japan, China, Korea and Thailand from Asia, Argentina (as hosts), Brazil, Peru and Colombia from South America, and the Dominican Republic, USA, Cuba and Mexico from NORCECA are already qualified to the world event, which will be held in Rosario and Santa Fe 18-27 August.

Italy will play Serbia and Belarus will clash with defending champions Russia in the semifinals of the European Championship on Saturday, ahead of the medals matches on Sunday.

The closing day of pool play, Thursday, saw Belarus finish undefeated after shutting out Poland 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) to knock the 2013 continental champions out of the medals round. Serbia also sailed through from Pool II after a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-14) sweep of Greece that saw them get a slight edge over Poland on ranking points.



Italy also wrapped up pool play undefeated with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20) win over The Netherlands. Russia joined Italy in the medals round from Pool I after a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15) win over bottom of the table Turkey.
