Volleyball mourns passing of Michel Vandermeulen

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 22, 2016 - The FIVB mourns the death of Michel Vandermeulen who passed away on March 17 at the age of 70. He leaves his wife Gerrie Henderikx, son, daughter and grandchildren.

A popular FIVB Instructor, Mr Vandermeulen had been actively involved in teaching and coaching volleyball and was due to begin a course for the Volleyball Federation of the Congo this week. His role as an FIVB Instructor took him to many French speaking African countries where his talent as a teacher and love of the game helped to educate and train new generations of players and coaches. He had recently given courses in Morocco, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mr Vandermeulen was also a physical education teacher. He played volleyball in Maaseik and Bree and coached several teams including Belgian first division club Red Star Leuven.

In 1992 he became the first French speaking Belgian Level 1 FIVB Instructor. He was also among the founders of Volleymagazine and covered the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Poland for the publication in 2014.

A funeral service will be held at the church of Notre-Dame de Gerdingen at Gerdingen-Bree, Belgium on Wednesday, March 23 at 10.30. A memorial service will take place in the same church on Saturday, April 16 at 17.30. For more information, click here.
