Toyoda Gosei Trefuerza seize Japan V Premier League men’s title
Tokyo, Japan, March 13, 2016 – Toyoda Gosei Trefuerza seized the Japanese V Premier League title, after they defeated Panasonic Panthers 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8) at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday.
Brazilian star Dante Amaral and Japan opposite Kunihiro Shimizu spearheaded Panasonic Panthers’ winning drive in the opening set. Toyoda Gosei retaliated in the second frame and grabbed the 2-1 set advantage, as Croatian cannon Igor Omrcen led his side on the attack. Panasonic bounced back and forced a tie-breaker, but Toyoda Gosei eased off in the deciding set to clinch their second major national title this season. The V Premier League champions also captured the Emperor’s Cup title earlier this year.
Toyoda Gosei coach Anders Kristiansson was ecstatic after his team’s 3-2 victory over Panasonic Panthers.
“This victory was fantastic and meaningful to my team,” Kristiansson said. “For this entire season, we have maintained to be on top of the standings. I felt it was a very tough and long season because all the teams were trying to defeat us. However, we were able to play the way we wanted to this season.”
Omrcen, who tallied 39 points in the match was named Most Valuable Player of the Season.
“This season, we nearly won 90 per cent of the matches in the league,” Omrcen said. “It was an incredible season for me. This award would not be possible without the help of my team-mates, the president of Toyoda Gosei, and the kind people around me, especially the fans.”
