Rexona Ades and Villa Dora off to good starts at South American Club Championship

Defending champions Rexona Ades start another campaign with a victory over host team GELP in the South American Women's Club Championship
La Plata, Argentina, February 25, 2016 – Rexona Ades of Brazil and Villa Dora of Argentina won on opening day of the South American Women’s Club Championship at Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata on Wednesday.

Argentine club Villa Dora obtained a straight-set (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) victory over Juan Ferreira of Uruguay. Marcia Scacchi led all scorers with 17 points, while team-mates Candelaria Herrera and Cris Vorphal contributed 12 points apiece for the Argentine victory. Juan Ferreira’s Andrea Cammarano tallied 13 points, while Florencia Aguirre added 12 points.

“It was a great victory because we played the match with intelligence and we used our best weapon – our attack,” Villa Dora coach Lorena Gongora said.

“We had good moments in the match but our attack mistakes cost us the game,” Juan Ferreira spiker Paola Galusso. “It’s a great experience for us to play with this quality of competition.”

Meanwhile, Brazilian powerhouse Rexona Ades overwhelmed the La Plata-based club GELP in their debut match with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-9) triumph. Ana Carolina Silva led the tournament favourites Rexona Ades with 16 markers.

“We came to this competition with the goal of obtaining the title and the berth for the (FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club) World Championship,” Rexona Ades coach Bernardo Rezende. “I was surprised by the local audience, I want them at home.”

“We knew the calibre of the team we will face but we could not show our best in this match,” GELP captain Tatiana Vera said.

GELP will have their chance to redeem themselves against Olympic of Bolivia on Thursday, while Universidad San Martin de Porres of Peru will debut against Juan Perreira.
