New Olympic venue to welcome World League and World Grand Prix matches in Rio
The World Grand Prix and World League matches in Rio de Janeiro this year will be held at the Carioca Arena 1, which is part of the Olympic complex in the Barra de Tijuca neighbourhood of the city. The two competitions, which will be organised in collaboration with the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation and the Organising Committee of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will take place at the brand new Olympic facility, which will be the venue for basketball at this year’s Summer Games, in order to test its event operating capacity with the general public. The men’s and women’s Olympic volleyball tournaments will be played at the Maracanazinho Arena, the traditional home for the sport in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2016 editions of the World Grand Prix and World League take place in the immediate build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The World Grand Prix Preliminary Round will be played from June 3-12 (Groups 2 and 3) and June 10-26 (Group 1). It will be followed by the Group 2 and 3 Finals from June 17 to 19 and the Group 1 Final from July 6 to 10.
The World League Preliminary Round will be played from June 17 to 26 (Group 3) and June 17 to July 3 (Groups 1 and 2). The Finals will follow from July 1 to 3 (Group 3), July 9 to 10 (Group 2) and July 13 to 17 (Group 1).
This year’s World Grand Prix Group 1 Finals will be held in the Thai capital Bangkok, while Poland will play hosts to the World League Group 1 Finals, at a venue to be confirmed. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games kick off just under three weeks later and will take place from August 5-21.
