New Olympic venue to welcome World League and World Grand Prix matches in Rio

 
Rio de Janeiro will host World League and World Grand Prix matches in 2016
 
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, February 24, 2016 - The FIVB is pleased to announce that the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park will play host to this year’s FIVB Volleyball World League and World Grand Prix matches in Brazil. The venue will welcome the women’s teams of Brazil, Italy, Japan and Serbia in the Preliminary Round of the World Grand Prix from June 9 to 12. Hosts Brazil will be joined by the men’s teams of Iran, Argentina and USA in the Preliminary Round of the World League from June 16 to 18.

The World Grand Prix and World League matches in Rio de Janeiro this year will be held at the Carioca Arena 1, which is part of the Olympic complex in the Barra de Tijuca neighbourhood of the city. The two competitions, which will be organised in collaboration with the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation and the Organising Committee of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will take place at the brand new Olympic facility, which will be the venue for basketball at this year’s Summer Games, in order to test its event operating capacity with the general public. The men’s and women’s Olympic volleyball tournaments will be played at the Maracanazinho Arena, the traditional home for the sport in Rio de Janeiro.

The schedule for the World Grand Prix and World League matches in Rio de Janeiro is as follows:

                                - 17.15 – Serbia v Japan

June 10 - Friday - 14.45 – Brazil v Japan
                             - 17.15 – Italy v Serbia

June 12 - Sunday - 10.05 – Brazil v Serbia
                               - 12.35 – Japan v Italy

June 16 - Thursday - 14.45 – Brazil v Iran
                                  - 17.15 – Argentina v USA

June 17 - Friday   - 14.45 – Brazil v Argentina

                                  - 23.10 – Brazil v USA

Matches featuring the Brazilian team will be covered by Rede Globo. SPORTV will broadcast the other matches in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2016 editions of the World Grand Prix and World League take place in the immediate build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The World Grand Prix Preliminary Round will be played from June 3-12 (Groups 2 and 3) and June 10-26 (Group 1). It will be followed by the Group 2 and 3 Finals from June 17 to 19 and the Group 1 Final from July 6 to 10.

The World League Preliminary Round will be played from June 17 to 26 (Group 3) and June 17 to July 3 (Groups 1 and 2). The Finals will follow from July 1 to 3 (Group 3), July 9 to 10 (Group 2) and July 13 to 17 (Group 1).

This year’s World Grand Prix Group 1 Finals will be held in the Thai capital Bangkok, while Poland will play hosts to the World League Group 1 Finals, at a venue to be confirmed. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games kick off just under three weeks later and will take place from August 5-21.
