World Tour Countdown -8: Virgen/Ontiveros take eight steps to podium

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 7, 2016 – One of the teams set for action at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Kish Island Open 2016 in eight days’ time will be Mexican pair Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros, and eight is the same number of tries it took the duo to claim their first podium spot.

That medal came in front of their home fans at the 2014 Puerto Vallarta open as they beat Eric Koreng and Finn Dittelbach of Germany in three thrilling sets (21-16, 18-21, 21-19), including a marathon final set.

It was the highest ever placing for a Mexican team at the time. The duo beat their own record at last year’s Antalya Open where they claimed silver behind Italy’s Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri. Their defensive game is pretty rock solid, as you can see from the below clip.
