Kish Island prepares to host first Open in 2016
Registration for the event is open since December 21 and 65 teams from 23 countries have confirmed their interest so far. Iran and Kazakhstan have signed up a record seven teams each. The event has clearly attracted a lot of interest and the list of participants will be finalised shortly before the event, with 32 teams grouped into eight four-team pools.
Palm trees and other exotic vegetation welcome numerous tourists to Kish Island every year. Facilities include a choice of hotels and resorts, amusement parks and recreational areas, a 70 km cycling track, horse riding, karting, scuba diving and jet skiing. Tourists can also visit the island’s ancient ruins of Harrireh.
The Kish Island sports complex has already hosted several beach volleyball competitions, including three editions of the Asian-Pacific Beach Volleyball Tour between 2007 and 2010. It has been rebuilt specially to host the World Tour and includes four courts, including one with a capacity for 1500 spectators, and features designated areas for VIPs, television cameras, referees and other official staff, making it a true centre for beach volleyball.
The Kish Island Open follows on from three Open events in 2015, including the Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico, the Antalya Open in Turkey and the Qatar Open in Doha. It will be followed by the Maceio Open in Brazil from February 23 to 28.
The 2015/2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour includes a total of 14 Open events, five Grand Slam events, three Swatch FIVB World Tour Major Series stops and the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals. The beach volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will provide another major highlight of this year’s beach volleyball calendar.
